If you feel you have screenshotted an interesting pageview number of mine, show me and explain why it is awesome. Never know, It might be worth something... :0

Don't worry, I'll keep this one short.

Graphic Design in relation to Art. Two styles of visual communication with a lot of areas that can overlap. Do you, then, think that someone being an artist qualifies them for graphic design? Or the other way?

In my opinion - no, because while a lot of general rules and such overlap, and while talent in one will definitely help with the other... they're just not the same thing. Thing is though, I'm not sure I quite know WHY I think this. The closest I came to justifying it was "Artists aim to capture emotion, Designers aim to evoke it".

Discuss.

Hmm, well--technically, they require the exact same technical knowledge (such as understanding what makes a strong composition, color theory, the elements and principals of design and drawing, etc) and the goal of graphic design vs the goal of illustration overlaps quite a bit. A lot of people say that Illustration is a practice that sits in the shadow of graphic design, since graphic design seems to be a lot more broad. A lot of graphic designer need to be able to illustrate, while an illustrator doesn't necessarily need to know things like typography. However, just based on the knowledge it takes to be a strong illustrator alone, someone could probably apply those same rules to graphic design work and be quite successful.

Art is expression of one's self though thier chosen medium, In our case this is mostly making pretty pictures that we can all enjoy.

Graphic design, as I understand it, is more a practicle implication of the same thing. Such as corprate logos and road signs.
Although they can be seen as 'art', it tends to be more functional rather than the expression of the artists themselves.

Others of course may disagree, but that's how I see it and it works for me :D

Bachelor of Design is a really fucking strict program. Bachelor of Fine Arts is a lot more lenient.

mehthinks that sums it up. |D

Well I'd say being an artist means you have a soul, while being a graphic designer means you don't!

...hahhaa okay no.

For serious, I think graphic designers ARE artists, in their own ways. So I don't really understand your distinction.

Would it help you if I replaced 'artist' with 'illustrator' or something?

I wouldn't say they require the EXACT same technical knowledge... To my knowledge, there tend to be a lot more rules as far as graphic design is concerned. A lot of arty ones overlap partially into design, so a knowledge of art can make you a semi-successful designer, but that alone isn't often enough.

Remember you were saying about one of those DA album logos? Some artist thought it'd be a good idea to have a detailed blah di blah with a thing, because in artistic terms it holds the viewer's attention, and guides it around, all happy things like that. In terms of graphic design though, it's one of the weakest things you could hope to achieve. Like with the Two tone of his head that guy suggested. Artistically? It can work. Design...fully? Fail.

hehe I guess it's like, "what's the different between a dancer and a choreographer?"... no one knows but people involved get stuffy if you use the wrong term xD
